Tandus Flooring received the 2009 Antron Carpet Fiber Sustainable Flooring Performance Award for its Powerbond installation in Westminster High School. The award recognizes floorcoverings using Antron fiber that have continued to meet the needs of the client in both design and performance. Tandus has won every year since the award’s inception.

Westminster High School of the Adams County School District (ACSD) 50 in Westminster, CO was chosen for the sustainability of the Powerbond floorcovering originally installed 35 years ago. Powerbond floorcovering, constructed with Antron nylon, covers approximately 80 percent of the 143,000 square-foot facility and is still performing after three decades of daily wear-and-tear.

“The Powerbond at Westminster High School is now 35 years old and has outlasted its life expectancy,” said Andy Moore, manager of maintenance and custodial at WHS. “Its performance has proven to be superior with daily abuse and daily cleaning.”

The ACSD 50 took note of Powerbond’s performance at WHS as the hybrid resilient floorcovering currently covers 80 percent of the 1.2 million square-feet of maintainable space within the district—that equates to approximately 960,000 square-feet of Powerbond handling the daily foot traffic of 10,000 students.

“Westminster High School is a clear winner over time,” said Dennis Fortune of sustainability director for McGill University and award judge. “To hold up to that amount of foot traffic, it clearly functioned beyond expectations.”

The ACSD 50 will expand this year with the opening of the New Westminster High School, a 365,000 square-foot facility, and will include Powerbond installations in classrooms, media centers, hallways and offices.
