Excellence, whether in a vocation or an avocation, is something most of us aspire to at some point. Part of the reward lies in the personal satisfaction of a job well done, but recognition from your peers can be just as important. In that spirit of recognition, FCI, in conjunction with our sister publication National Floor Trends, started the Installation Excellence Awards in 2000 to recognize excellence in the field of floor covering installation. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and we are now calling for your submissions for the 2003 Installation Excellence Awards. If you would like the chance to be recognized for the excellence of your installation skills, knowledge and creativity, please take a few minutes to fill out the entry form in this issue and return it along with two pictures of your best installation of 2002. Ten finalists will be selected and featured in FCI throughout 2003; each finalist will receive $250 and a chance for the grand prize. The grand prize winner will be selected from the 10 finalists. In addition to being featured in the November/December issue of FCI, the grand prize winner will receive airfare for two and hotel accommodations for three days in Las Vegas during Surfaces 2004, plus $700 cash. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 31, 2002, so get out your cameras and sharpen those pencils; the earlier you get your submission in, the better your chances. Speaking of excellence, FCI has two new columnists joining our roster of monthly contributors: Jon Namba, who will be doing case studies of all types of flooring installations; and Mickey Moore, who will focus on wood-related installation issues. Both are experts in their respective fields, and will help increase the magazine's excellence in installation coverage. Jon Namba is currently serving as technical services director for the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA). Namba also responds to both professional and consumer inquiries on technical issues regarding all floor coverings. Namba is also currently the president of the International Certified Floor Covering Installers Association (CFI), and serves as a member of CFI's executive board. On the installation side, Namba is an experienced installer of all types of flooring, and won the carpet division of the National Installation Contest at Surfaces 2001, as well as being a regional winner of the resilient division in 1998. Namba's credentials in the floor covering field are extensive: IICRC Certified Cleaning Technician, IICRC Certified Senior Carpet Inspector, CFI Certified Master II Installer and Senior Certifier, to name only a few. Mickey Moore is currently the technical director of the Wood Flooring Manufacturers Association (NOFMA), a position he has held since 1988. Recently, he developed a program to certify NOFMA wood flooring inspectors. Prior to joining NOFMA, Moore worked as a remodeling sub-contractor and QC inspector for a general contractor. Moore is a graduate of the University of Memphis with a degree in wood working technology and biology. The addition of these two new columnists will help FCI in our goal to promote excellence in the floor covering installation field. The Installation Excellence Awards allows us to recognize that excellence in practice, where it really counts. Whether it's for your own satisfaction, or for recognition among your peers for your dedication to your craft, excellence is always a worthy goal.
