The Commerce Department reported that sales of new homes soared 5.7 percent to a new record in November.

Sales climbed to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.069 million units from an upwardly revised 1.011 million in October. Sales in the Midwest were 41.2 percent in the month to a record-level 257,000 unit rate.
