The WFCA's Chris Davis and Jon Namba share a moment at the podium Friday evening as FCI publisher Dan Lipman looks on.
CFI arrived at the Marriott Airport Hotel in Los Angeles as “The Stars of the Century,” looking to paint the town burgundy for the eighth annual CFI Convention, July 25-29. Billed as the educational event of the year for the installation professional, the numerous workshops and seminars provided demonstrations and hands-on involvement throughout the convention.

“This year’s theme, ‘The Power of One,’ tells the CFI story of how each member has contributed to the growth of the organization,” explains Executive Director Jim Walker. “This theme will prevail throughout the weekend, paying tribute to everyone who has been responsible for the substantial membership that CFI enjoys today.”

The CFI Board of Directors met Wednesday morning, followed by tours of the manufacturing facilities of Associate Members Atlas, Tuftex-Shaw Mills and Monterey Carpet. For those members who have never been privy to it, this was an exciting opportunity to view the manufacturing process firsthand.

The CFI/WFCA Leadership Conference, developed by Jim Walker and D.J. Harrington, began 8 a.m. Thursday. D. Christopher Davis, CEO of the World Floor Covering Association, participated, as well as other guest speakers. The conference provided an opportunity for those looking to add to their skills as leaders in the industry. Attendance has continued to grow each year since the conference’s inception and, due to seating availability, only CFI members may attend. If seats are still available on July 16, those on the waiting list will be notified.

The CFI/WFCA Leadership Conference was filled to capacity.
From 3 to 6 p.m., the “Visit the Associates” session provides members the opportunity to converse with manufacturers and view the latest tools, equipment, and installation technology in the market. Many of the manufacturers also sponsor the annual CFI Convention Jacket.

Along with the Chapter Meeting, The CFI “First Timer’s Reception” and “First Timer’s Meeting” are both scheduled for Thursday evening. Earlier that afternoon, the CFI Master-II written test will be given.

Friday morning, the CFI Educational Extravaganza begins. “The two-hour workshops include the latest information available to the flooring community,” notes Convention Committee Chairman Andrew Aufiero. “We schedule many of our events a year in advance in order to bring the best knowledge to our attendees.”

That evening, CFI installers and associates wear their “Pride,” dressed in the attire that best represents how they advertise their companies daily. Those who best exemplify CFI professionalism will be selected as “The Best Dressed Stars of the Evening.”

D.J. Harrington and Bernie Madden welcome the enthusiastic crowd.
The educational workshops continue through Saturday, after which convention attendees will dress as their favorite actor or actress, displaying a favorite sport or hobby; those selected will do their turn on the catwalk on “The Parade of Stars on the CFI Walk of Fame.” The evening’s entertainment will include CFI’s own aspiring “Stars of the Future,” as well as karaoke, live music, singers and comedians.

During the meetings, the Charlie Gress Award recipients for 2001, along with the winners of the CFI jackets, will be announced. The 2001 Leadership Conference Attendees and the new Regional Certification Teams will also be introduced. The “Big CFI Brunch” will close out the convention Sunday morning.
