MAPEI recently hosted an event at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City to celebrate the completion of the building’s exterior restoration. MAPEI products were used exclusively in the repair and coating of the spiraling concrete exostructure of the famous Frank Lloyd Wright building.
“Helping to conserve the history of an architectural icon like the Guggenheim is tremendously rewarding, and we are delighted that MAPEI’s concrete restoration systems were selected for this restoration,” said Rainer Blair, President and CEO of MAPEI Americas.
During the first part of the afternoon, Amanda Thomas-Trienens, Senior Conservator for Integrated Conservation Resources, Inc., gave an AIA/CES-approved presentation on the technical aspects of architecturally conserving a historical landmark. With graphs and photos, she demonstrated the challenges that arose and were overcome in defining the degree of deterioration in the exterior of the building, selecting the proper materials for restoration, and maintaining the aesthetic of the original finished surface.
After the presentations, MAPEI hosted a reception in the Guggenheim Museum rotunda. Guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and the chance to ascend the six-story spiral of the museum as they viewed the Guggenheim’s latest exhibit.
