Surfaces is expanding with the 2014 edition of the show, welcoming not only the return of StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas, but the launch of TileExpo to become the International Surface Event. Launching at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, with education running Jan. 27-30 and exhibits running Jan. 28-30, Surfaces 2014 will host not just one but two conventions this year. A new East Coast version of the show, dubbed International Surface Event East, will touch down in Miami, Oct. 19-22 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
According to Amie Gilmore, associate show director, “The International Surface Event is the largest flooring, stone and tile event in North America. As such, our event attracts numerous prominent businesses as both exhibitors and attendees, with diverse professional backgrounds all looking to do business with the best of the best in the industry.”
This year’s show will offer several new and returning features, including Tool Alley, sponsored by Floor Covering Installerand featuring a return appearance from DIY Network’s “Cool Tools” host Chris Grundy to assist exhibitors in demonstrating their latest flooring installation tools and accessories. Additional show areas include The Social Lounge, sponsored by Floor Trends and featuring social media experts talking about the latest trends in the social media landscape; The Event Main Stage, where exhibitors will offer education and installation demonstrations; and the New Product Marketplace, sponsored by Floor Covering Installer, Floor Trends, TILEand several other BNP Media brands.
Installation Certifications and Education. A major draw for floor covering installers and contractors is several installation certifications and programs slated for the show, including those from International Certified Floorcovering Installers (CFI), the Ceramic Tile Education Foundation (CTEF), International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) for Concrete Slab Moisture Testing, and the North American Laminate Flooring Association (NALFA). At press time, FCI was making plans as the publication sponsor of both the CFI and CTEF certifications, including a special happy hour for installers.
According to CFI’s Jane Walker, “January 28 and 29, flooring installers are registered from around the world to participate in CFI training and certification in ceramic, laminate and wood flooring surfaces. Those who successfully complete the laminate and wood flooring CFI certification may also apply for the NWFA and NALFA Certifications.”
She added, “Visit the CFI booth, B3687, on the lower floor and speak with the CFI team about training programs, scheduling events and to answer your questions. Also, attend seminars at 11:45 a.m. Thursday on The Art of Matching Carpet Patterns demonstrated by Jim Walker, Robert Varden and Ed Braile; followed at 12:30 p.m. with Seaming Resilient Products demonstrations by Tim Provence, Bob Gillespie and Tony Buckhardt.”
CTEF will offer both Certified Tile Installer (CTI), and Advanced Certifications for Tile Installers (ACT) certifications. “CTEF is excited to participate in TileExpo and demonstrate the Certified Tile Installer (CTI) testing which is the only tile installer certification that is recognized by the tile industry,” noted Scott Carothers, CTEF director of certification and training.
CTEF will be offering CTI certification on Tuesday and Wednesday at TileExpo. CTEF and the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers (IUBAC) will conduct ACT certification Tuesday through Thursday at TileExpo. Carothers added, “This installer certification moves beyond the skill levels of a CTEF Certified Tile Installer or an IUBAC Journeyman to establish certifications for specific advanced skills including Large-Format Tile and Surface Prep, Membranes, Mud Floors, Mud Walls and Shower Receptors.”
NALFA President Bill Dearing said his group is excited to be part of Surfaces 2014, at Booth S7158. “The Pavilion will feature NALFA Certified Laminate Flooring and all NALFA members will be represented. The Pavilion will also be used for the NALFA Inspector Certification class and installation demonstrations from Hanley Wood. We’re also excited to recognize industry leaders through the annual Lammy Awards.”
A range of flooring installation educational sessions will also be offered at Surfaces on topics including hardwood, laminate, bamboo, cork, resilient, tile and stone, radiant heating systems, moisture issues, substrate preparation, sound reduction products and a discussion on the upcoming ANSI/IICRC S600 Carpet Installation standard. FCI Editorial Director Jon Namba will offer two presentations: “Installation Failures and Solutions: Hardwood, Laminate and Bamboo,” 9 to 11 a.m. Jan. 27; and “Proper Substrate Preparation for Hardwood, Laminate and Bamboo,” with MAPEI’s Jeff Johnson, 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. Jan. 29.
New Products and Services. Surfaces wouldn’t be complete without one of its main draws – a chance to see a wide array of new products and services for the flooring industry. Bostik (Booth B2845) will feature products with new Axios Tri-Linking Polymer Technology.
“Axios takes advantage of a tightly interwoven proprietary molecule to significantly inhibit water molecules from passing through, dramatically improving moisture vapor protection, sound reduction and strength. The booth and product line up will also showcase the extensive Bostik identity and brand makeover,” said Chris Eichman, marketing communications manager.
Todd Hall, director of product development for Cal-Flor Accessory Systems (Booth B2726), said he looks forward to Surfaces because “the information and inspiration gleaned from thousands of people and products gathered during those three days is distilled into specific concepts that we can in turn work through R&D.” Cal-Flor will unveil an expanded FloorFix Mix-To-Match Repair Kit, a “lower carbon footprint” Eco-Clean Concentrate and a solvent-free ClickSeal, he said.
DriTac (Booth B3555) will present 7700 Easy Clean 4-In-1, “a completely green, premium MS polymer sound- and moisture-control wood flooring adhesive able to install engineered hardwood, solid plank and bamboo flooring. This product can be utilized as a 4-In-1 sound and moisture control product or an adhesive only, simply by changing the trowel used,” said David Clarkson, vice president of business development and marketing.
He added, “DriTac will announce the winners of three free Apple iPads at our Surfaces booth with the culmination of our DriTac TriplePlay Promotion, which features the very successful introduction of DriTac’s Eco-Friendly Resilient Flooring Adhesive line.”
Franklin International (Booth B3003) is unveiling two new products: Titebond Wood Flooring Tape for engineered and solid hardwood flooring installations, and Titebond 670 adhesive for LVT, vinyl sheet, solid tile and rubber flooring. Additionally, Franklin will demonstrate its Titebond 531+ Moisture Control System and other products.
Mark Lamanno, technical marketing manager, flooring, noted, “We are especially excited to participate this year; the show is the ideal venue for us to launch two new Titebond flooring products – to people who can most appreciate their potential on the jobsite.”
H.B. Fuller Construction Products (Booth B3054) will exhibitboth Tec and Chapco products, including Tec’s full line of surface preparation, tile setting and flooring adhesive products. According to Grant Huffine, senior market manager, “The show allows a unique opportunity to debut our new innovations and showcase both our flooring adhesives and our tile-setting solutions.”
Thomas Trissl, principal of HPS Schönox (Booth B4225), said Surfaces offers valuable exposure. “Even though Schönox has been available in more than 20 countries for over 100 years, we are still fairly new in the U.S. The Surfaces show is our chance to share valuable information regarding the technological and environmental details of the Schönox products.”
Jack Boesch, director of marketing for MP Global Products (Booth B3233) said the Surfaces show is important to his company. “We think it is important to support the show because it offers a wonderful opportunity for cross-pollination within the flooring industry.”
The company will be launching its QuietWarmth Film, a low-wattage radiant heat system for floating wood and laminate floors that uses just six watts per square foot while conforming to warranty requirements of many floating floors.
According to Jamie Clingan, senior vice president of marketing of QEP (Booth Breakers F), “We are a rapidly changing company and we look at Surfaces as a perfect opportunity to meet with our partners to update them on QEP, give them an opportunity to meet the entire QEP team and be able to present our gallery of product offerings in a showroom-type setting.”
She added, “QEP truly plays in all categories of flooring, whether it be tools and accessories for the installation of hard or soft surfaces, as well as now providing floor covering in the form of engineered wood flooring with Harris Wood or laminate flooring with Faus.”
Irene Plank, director of marketing for Schluter-Systems (Booth B2820), stated, “Surfaces has always been an important show for us, and the addition of TileExpo only enhances this event as an excellent opportunity to spend time with people from every facet of the tile and stone industry.”
Along with conducting live demonstrations, Schluter will debut Ditra-Heat, a system that combines an electric floor warming system with the uncoupling technology of Ditra in a single layer. “There has already been a lot of buzz about this product and we’re excited to present it at Surfaces,” Plank said.
USG (Booth B2661) will showcase several new products. “We wouldn’t miss the opportunities Surfaces provides to showcase our new product innovations, like the USG Durock Shower System and its complementary custom shower pan program, along with the new USG Durock UltraLight Foam Tile Backerboard, which continues to extend our backerboard/underlayment product portfolio,” said Rich Willett, director, substrates & specialties division.
A range of trade groups, including FCITS (Flooring Consultants and Inspection Training Services), the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), INSTALL, the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) and the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) which is partnering extensively with CFI on installer events across the country, will also be on hand.
INSTALL Director John McGrath stated, “INSTALL values the networking opportunities made available at Surfaces. We participate in many productive meetings and educational seminars. Surfaces is especially helpful to INSTALL because it gathers many important people in Las Vegas, and our International Training Center campus is one mile away.”
Added Anita Howard, NWFA chief operating officer, “The NWFA will once again be exhibiting at Surfaces with NWFA members in the Wood Flooring Pavilion. The pavilion includes turn-key displays for exhibitors, with the benefit of the traditional heavy traffic to the NWFA booth. The NWFA Wood Flooring Pavilion will also include a lounge area that members can use to network and use for informal meetings.”
She noted, “The NWFA also will be partnering this year with NHLA to present the ‘Truth About Trees’ program to a group of local elementary school children. The program presents information in a fun and interactive way about how trees are important to each of us, and how we can care for our forests to make them healthier and available for generations to come.”
