FAST president
Don Barrett Jr. has been named president and CEO of the Flooring Academy of Specialized Training (FAST) Career Institute.

Don Barrett, Jr. will serve as president and CEO of the Flooring Academy of Specialized Training (FAST) Career Institute.

Based in Dalton, Barrett is a well known and respected veteran of the flooring industry with over 40 years of experience in the flooring manufacturing, big box retailing and installation trades.

With an early, family business career as an installation apprentice, Barrett took what he learned and applied it to his family’s retail and installation services company in Indiana during the early 1970s. By 1979, Barrett had created an installer training program which he taught for Indiana Vocational Technical College (IVEY Tech) in Muncie, Ind., starting his interest in formal installer training.

Barrett has served on numerous Carpet & Rug Institute committees and as a board member for Habit for Humanity. Spurred by concerns about the coming installer shortage, he pulled together several friends and retailers and started putting together a new and different approach to adding installer capacity through recruiting and training of what he calls “The world’s greatest helpers.”

According to Barrett, “If you want apples you plant trees, if you want corn, you plant seeds; so if you want installers you plant helpers and that’s where great Installers come from. We need some new thinking and new processes to recruit, train and place new people into the flooring installation trade. We are building FAST to be the best model hands-on training facility developed to do just that.”
