New CFI Training Facility Graduates First Class
The International Certified Floorcovering Installers Association (CFI) has graduated its first class from the new CFI Training Facility in Forney, Texas.
Since its opening, a number of retailers have contacted the institution with leads on potential students as well as an interest in underwriting scholarships for students who then can go on to work for them with certified, cutting-edge installation expertise that cannot be garnered anywhere else in the world.
Interested students do not need any previous installation experience to attend the CFI class. The course offers a comprehensive line-up of all the technical aspects required for basic residential carpet installation.
The next accelerated carpet installation class begins May 16 in Anaheim, Calif. In addition to the accelerated carpet class, the school also offers long and short-term training programs in every flooring product category for students at all levels.

Armstrong Completes Spin-off, Names Executive Team
Armstrong World Industries has announced that it successfully completed its previously announced separation of Armstrong Flooring, Inc. as an independent public company, trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol “AFI.”
Additionally, Armstrong Flooring announced the executive team for its newly spun-off flooring business.
Donald R. Maier will serve as president and chief executive officer. Maier came to Armstrong six years ago as part of the TPG private equity investment team. Prior to that, he worked for Hill-Rom. John “Jay” W. Thompson will serve as senior vice president and chief financial officer. Thompson has been with Armstrong for one year and prior to that worked with Chobani, Pepsico, TPG, Bain & Co. and Goldman Sachs.
David S. Schulz will serve as senior vice president and chief operating officer. Shultz has been with Armstrong four years and prior to that was CFO of P&G’s Snack Division.
Dominic C. Rice continues to serve as senior vice president focused on Armstrong’s North America commercial flooring business. Rice has been with Armstrong for 34 years.
Joseph N. Bondi serves as senior vice president for Armstrong’s North America residential flooring business. He has been with Armstrong for two years and prior to that worked for Certainteed and Lutron.

MMFA Publishes Technical Installation Bulletin
The Multilayer Modular Flooring Association (MMFA) has published its first technical bulletin on the subject “Installation of multilayer modular floor coverings (MMF).”
According to the association, this new technical document deals exclusively with how to lay a modular, multilayer floor (MMF) as a floating installation.
The technical bulletin provides an overview of the various MMF product structures and also illustrates the correct way to prepare different types of subfloors. Other sections of the bulletin address issues such as inspection and storage of MMF products prior to installation, a list of the tools generally required, an explanation of conventional laying directions and a recommendation for using a suitable underlay to improve the performance of the entire flooring system.
Because MMF should in principle be installed as a floating floor, the document also gives detailed advice on connecting to adjoining components and includes instructions on fitting expansion joints correctly and using suitable transition strips. The special aspects of installing MMF over modern underfloor heating/cooling systems are also outlined.
USGBC Announces Addenda to LEED
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has announced the quarterly addenda to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system, which includes a new pilot Alternative Compliance Path (ACP) credit that is designed to further advance environmentally responsible forest management and help rid buildings of illegal wood by promoting the use of wood that is verified to be legal.
The pilot ACP builds on the robust infrastructure that has been built around responsible wood sourcing and chain of custody to test an approach to prerequisite requirements, which could serve as a model for other building materials, USGBC noted.
This new pilot ACP is applicable to both LEED 2009 and LEED v4 systems. While LEED has always rewarded leadership in materials specification, this new ACP seeks to leverage LEED’s power by focusing attention on the significant need for more comprehensive and effective legality verification of building products. The pilot ACP is designed to address a critical piece of the supply chain and reward project teams who proactively verify the wood they are using is legal.

ProSource Wholesale has announced the grand opening of its Billings, Mont., and Coppell, Texas showrooms. The showrooms are independently owned by local business professionals and join more than 140 ProSource North American private showrooms that sell exclusively through a qualified network of more than 320,000 trade professionals who have become members since 1991.
Consumers can only access ProSource floor coverings through their builder, remodeler, interior designer, general contractor, real estate professional, installer and other trade professionals.

InstaFloor Announces 15-Year Guarantee
InstaFloor has announced a new 15-year Guarantee for InstaLay when used with luxury vinyl tile (LVT) from Adore Floors. This follows the recent endorsement of InstaLay by Adore Floors.
The guarantee will cover registered installations of Adore’s dryback and click edge LVT systems, in various shapes, installed using either InstaLay 25 or 30. InstaLay 25hg, the 2.5mm-thick version of the self-adhesive InstaLay, was designed specifically for use with LVT, while InstaLay 30 is recommended for LVT of 3mm or thicker and if high acoustic performance is a priority.
I4F Receives Intention to Grant from EPO for Patent
Innovations4Flooring (I4F) has received an intention to grant letter from the European Patent Office (EPO) for a divisional patent application relating to its 3L TripleLock innovation.
I4F’s European patent strategy is designed to maintain flexibility as well as to fortify and broaden the scope of patent protection in relation to 3L TripleLock and its other technologies, according to the company. This benefits I4F licensees and makes it more difficult for competitors to design around I4F’s patent portfolio. I4F’s 3L TripleLock one-piece drop-lock technology currently has patents granted in 37 countries.
Reichow Partners with NAFCT for Wood Training
The National Academy of Floor Covering Training (NAFCT) has added IICRC Certification Wood Floor Maintenance Technician (WFMT) to its list of classes.
NAFCT and IICRC-approved instructor Roy Reichow are bringing the class to locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, with classes already scheduled for Minneapolis, May 19-20 and Toronto, June 8-9.
The wood floor maintenance technician course consists of 14 hours of training over two days. Emphasis will be placed on teaching participants an overview of wood floor care that includes initial, routine, periodic and restorative processes.
The introductory course was developed for individuals engaging in floor maintenance. It will teach the basic understanding of wood science, wood floor finish type and proper care and maintenance. Completion of this course will provide participants with the academic and hands-on training to obtain certification.
Reichow is a National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) regional trainer, and holds NWFA certifications in wood floor installation, sanding and finishing, sales counselor, inspector and commercial inspector. He is also an IICRC certified wood/laminate floor inspector and a wood floor maintenance technician-approved instructor.
Välinge Shares Tech Updates at Domotex asia/Chinafloor
Välinge was one of approximately 1,400 exhibitors that took part in this year’s Domotex asia/Chinafloor in Shanghai, China. Technology updates, new flooring products and also an extended protection offer for LVT/WPC products all played part in the successful show outcome.
Välinge’s stand featured a range of the company’s technologies. Some of the highlights were innovations in mechanical locking such as added installation features for LVT/WPC products, a protective wear layer for resilient products as well as the two wood-powder based surface technologies Woodura and Nadura.
Another highlight in the stand was a new machine concept for production of low-weight LVT cores. The machine has been developed for Välinge’s LVT 3D-Core technology and is used to mill grooves lengthwise on the backside of the LVT board.
FCICA CIM Scholarship Awarded to Cashwell

Clemente Joins Lackmond as Vice President of Sales
Mike Clemente is the new vice president of sales for Lackmond Products. In this role, Clemente will oversee the company’s sales strategies and business development in North America.
Clemente brings more than 36 years of experience in sales and distribution within the construction building materials markets.
Prior to joining Lackmond, he worked for Simpson Strong-Tie as the director of new business development for the anchor systems division. His other positions with Simpson Strong-Tie included national sales manager and regional sales manager.
During his time with the company, his team was recognized with consecutive Sphere 1 “Partner of the Year” awards as well as an Evergreen “Supplier of the Year” achievement award.
NWFA, Lägler Collaborate for Sand and Finish Program
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Certified Professionals and Lägler are working together to offer a dual-certification program for wood flooring sand and finishers. This dual certification opportunity will enable sand and finishers to build their credibility in the marketplace by holding certifications from two highly recognized entities.
According to the NWFA, the adoption of this program will raise the visibility of the NWFA Certified Professional certification. More than 30 manufacturers recommend using NWFA certified professionals for their wood flooring products.
Lägler has been offering a training and certification program for several years that recently came to the U.S. Once students complete the Lägler (PST) program and become Lägler certified, they can become an NWFA-certified sand and finisher as well.

Jast Media has revamped the Powerhold flooring installation supply brand’s website (powerhold.com). Jast sought to create a website for the brand that was unique, professional and functioned at an optimal level, according to the company.
“Our situation was compounded by several issues—one being that our members range in size and amount in revenue,” said Jeff Brugman, executive director of the Floor Covering Distributor Alliance (FCDA) and Powerhold.
For example, one distributor brings in $1 million per year in revenue, while another has more than 25 locations that bring in more than $600 million each year. According to Brugman, Jast was able to accommodate the multi-locational company and come up with a website design that fit the brand perfectly.

Rug Doctor has established a new business development team to leverage the growing appeal for the company’s machines.
Heading up the business development team as president is Harrison Dean, a seasoned sales executive with more than 20 years of experience in developing teams and driving top-line growth for organizations such as Garretson Resolution Group and Inmar.
