Missouri Tile Hosts Product Knowledge Training
Missouri Tile in Springfield, Mo., hosted product knowledge training on Oct. 27. More than 100 flooring installers attended the day-long event to see installation demonstrations by SunTouch floor warming systems, Compotite waterproofing membranes, Wedi backerboards, Laticrete installation materials and Rubi cutting tools.
“We used to host a two-hour event in the evening but realized that installers would rather come during the day,” said Scott Shortt, owner of Missouri Tile. “Contractors can come and go as they like throughout the day to see the demonstrations that interest them.”
Shaw Announces Plans to Acquire USFloors
Shaw Industries Group has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase USFloors.
USFloors is an innovator and marketer of wood-plastic composite (WPC) flooring in the luxury vinyl tile (LVT) category, as well as cork, bamboo and hardwood products. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter, after customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

Laticrete Supercap Partners with Arcom
Laticrete Supercap’s product data and customized speficiations are now available through Arcom’s software platforms to architects, engineers and design professionals.
Arcom and Laticrete Supercap have worked together to create customized versions of the industry-trusted MasterSpec sections to accurately specify Laticrete Supercap unique products. Along with these specification sections, the Laticrete Supercap product catalog and data sheets are easily accessible to specifiers when working on their projects.

FCICA Celebrates 35 Years
During the 2016/2017 membership year, the Flooring Contractors Association (FCICA) will celebrate its 35th year of promoting and representing the commercial floor covering industry.
According to the company, FCICA will continue its mission to provide relevant and innovative educational sessions led by industry leaders as well as member resources. FCICA will extend its webinar offerings to include one free product focused webinar per month beginning in January 2017.
Additionally, the Commercial Flooring Tradeshow, taking place March 6, 2017 in San Antonio, Texas, will host four product demonstrations for attendees.
Coming soon, FCICA will be launching a new interactive website and member center which will provide members with greater networking capabilities and business resources.
CCA Global Partners Raises $140K for FCIF
The 14th Annual Alan Greenberg Charity Golf Tournament hosted by CCA Global Partners recently took place at the Barnsley Gardens Resort in Adairsville, Ga.
Members and supporters of the floor covering industry gathered for a friendly round of golf to benefit the Floor Covering Industry Foundation (FCIF). The $140,000 in funds raised will support the foundation in their efforts to financially assist those who are, or have been, affiliated with the floor covering industry and have experienced a catastrophic illness, severe disability or other life-altering hardship.
Each year, the event draws manufacturers, distributors, retailers, industry trade associations and individuals from within the floor covering industry, along with supporters from related industries, together. They contribute to the FCIF by participating in the tournament as well as through sponsorships and donations.
INSTALL Launches Substrate Prep Certification Program
INSTALL has announced its first ever Substrate Prep Certification.
The certification process is a collaborative effort between INSTALL educators, contractors and industry manufacturers. It combines a revised substrate training curriculum with written and hands-on evaluation. The progression of demonstrations includes an orientation presentation followed by a 100-question written exam.
The last portion of the certification evaluation is the hands-on application and installation of underlayments. Ingrained within the program are assessments on preparation and installation skill sets including profiling; moisture and alkalinity measuring and mitigation; and ramping, self-leveling, skim coating, mixing and cleaning.
Successful participants received an INSTALL Certification Credential that has “recommendations, specifications and extended warranties from industry manufacturers,” INSTALL said.
The INSTALL Substrate Preparation Certification will be finalized the week of Jan. 9 at the Carpenters International Training Center in Las Vegas.
Fishman Announces Management Changes
Fishman Flooring Solutions has announced a number of management changes in anticipation of the continued growth of its business.
The following management changes will be effective on or before Jan. 1, 2017: Shane Richmond, currently regional manager for the Carolinas, will become regional vice president of the Northern region, responsible for sales and operations in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. Richmond, who has held a number of increasingly responsible positions since he joined Fishman in 1997, will relocate to the company’s corporate headquarters in Baltimore.
Mary Henritz, currently regional manager of the Northern region, will become director of procurement, a newly created role where she will be responsible for fine-tuning Fishman’s purchasing function to better meet the needs of the firm’s current and future customers. Henritz joined Fishman in 2008.
Matthew Thomas, currently a business manager in the Carolinas region, will become regional manager for the Carolinas, succeeding Richmond. In his new role, he will be responsible for six territory managers, seven branch locations and Fishman’s Carolinas staff. Thomas joined Fishman in 2013.
Dan Church, currently operations manager for the Virginia/Tennessee region, will fill the newly created position of manager of Fishman’s Baltimore headquarters branch, with responsibility for the branch’s daily operations. Church began his Fishman career in 2006.
Fishman Flooring Solutions is increasing its focus on continuously improving its operational excellence to meet the demands of today’s customers, as well as to accommodate future business growth. Leading the improvements in operations will be Gregg Cote, who has joined the firm as director of operations.
CFI Partners with Legacy Flooring to Help Veterans
The International Certified Floorcovering Installers Association (CFI) has partnered with Legacy Flooring of Raleigh, N.C., to help transitioning veterans find a career in the floor covering installation trade.
Under its non-profit entity, Leave a Legacy Foundation, Legacy Flooring’s mission is to assist the CFI with the initiative to recruit new installers into the floorcovering installation industry. Their personnel will work with the various military transition offices in an attempt to attract veterans and their families to the training classes.
According to CFI sources, the organization is in the process of submitting an application to the state of Texas to become a Veteran’s Administration authorized trade school. This would allow post-9/11 veterans and their families to have their tuitions subsidized by the G.I. Bill and pre-9/11 veterans by the Montgomery Bill and others.
Legacy Flooring will also partner with other installation service providers, like Installation Services, in Troy, Mich., to share ideas and recruit other like-minded service providers to establish schools across the country.
Kanare Promoted to Koster President
Koster has announced the appointment of Howard M. Kanare as president of the company, effective immediately. He will be responsible for the overall leadership of the company including strategic planning, product development, operations, sales, and marketing.
Kanare joined Koster in 2013 as technical director and was promoted to vice president in 2015. He has been responsible for developing Koster’s technical department, implemented the quality control system for the company’s new resin production plant, established a state-of-the-art analytical evaluation lab and training facility and coordinated product development with Koster Bauchemie in Aurich, Germany.
With 37 years’ experience in the concrete construction field, he is a nationally recognized expert specializing in the interaction of concrete floors and floor covering systems. He is known for making advancements in the characterization of cement and concrete, floor construction, floor covering systems, moisture measurement, and concrete moisture issues.
Kanare is also a renowned consultant, lecturer, standards developer, and trainer for concrete floor construction. He has authored over 30 technical publications including the bestselling book, Concrete Floors and Moisture.

NAC Releases 2017 Calendar
NAC Products has released its 2017 calendar: Classic Vehicles from the Flooring industry.
The calendar provides an opportunity for people in the flooring industry who own a classic vehicle to showcase it in the annual calendar, which has become an industry tradition. Whether it is a car, truck, farm tractor, motorcycle, airplane or boat, people from all over the world have participated, highlighting a variety of classic vehicles.
Previously, in addition to the featured vehicle, the calendar has highlighted a different product offering by NAC on each month. This year, each month features a major project that was completed and the corresponding NAC product or products that were installed.

Chapman, Bonitz CEO, Announces Plans to Retire at End of Year
Harold Chapman, president and CEO of Bonitz, Inc., headquartered in Columbia, S.C., will be retiring from the company effective at the end of the current year. After almost 40 years in the floor covering industry—including 34 years with Bonitz and three years in the current position—he has determined that the time is right for him to step aside.
While no immediate future plans have been set, he intends to be active in some capacity in the flooring industry. The Bonitz board will meet in the upcoming months to determine his replacement. The company added, “We wish Harold success in his future endeavors.”
Keene Acquires Continental Products Co.
Keene Building Products and Dependable have announced the addition to the portfolio of companies owned by Keene Family Holdings. The Continental Products Co., a manufacturing firm with branded products in the greenhouse and log cabin industry and a strong presence in specialty industrial coatings, has been acquired.
Manufacturer of Puttylastic, Weather Seal and Kool Ray brands, Continental has a good position in some niche markets, according to Keene. With a number of other manufacturing processes, the relationship with Keene and Dependable will allow for brand expansion and synergistic opportunities. This is the fifth acquisition for Jim Keene, with the object of growing more in the local community.
Bostik Sees Success with Subfloor Prep Launch
At the beginning of this year, Bostik unveiled an extensive line of surface preparation materials at The International Surface Event in Las Vegas. Now, in Q3, it’s apparent the marketplace has accepted these new products, according to the company.
Additionally, the online CEU course, “Surface Preparation for Flooring Installation: Meeting Industry Standards,” presented by Bostik’s Eric Kurtz, has been a major success, as well, according to the company.
Scott Banda, Bostik’s director of marketing and business development, added, “Our new cement-based self-levelers offer unique benefits and advantages including being affordably priced, adding installation thickness properties and being ‘walkable’ much faster than competitive products. Pallmann have added Indiana Floor as their newest distributor in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C., area. Indiana Floor will distribute the Pallmann Hardwood Complete Range through their five locations of Baltimore, Md.; Frederick, Md.; Sterling Va.; Lorton, Va. and Fredericksburg, Va.
Sika Corp. said Swiff-Train Co. has begun distributing the Sika Interior Finishing product range in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. This product range includes Sika’s commercial and residential solutions for wood flooring adhesives, moisture mitigation, subfloor preparation and self-leveling underlayments.
UFloor Systems recently announced the addition of Shamrock Flooring Accessories as its Uzin brand distributor for the province of Alberta, Canada. The company said this new partnership with Shamrock will continue to foster the growth of the Uzin product range in the Canadian market.
New Hires and Promotions
Matthew Carli has joined Laticrete’s marketing team as manager of business development, taking on several responsibilities, including financial forecasting and market research. Carli first began with Laticrete as a member of the management trainee program in 2013.
UFloor System’s Uzin brand has named Joe Law R&D technician for the research and development division. Law joins Uzin with more than 35 years of service in the floor covering industry in and around the Philadelphia area.
UFloor has also added Ray Darter to the Uzin division as technical sales representative in Southern California. Darter specializes in commercial and retail sales and has more than nine years of experience in the flooring industry both in distribution and as an installer.
Watts Water Technologies has appointed Joe Pabian to the position of national sales manager for national accounts. Pabian has 15 years of industry experience and most recently was with Ward Manufacturing, where he served as Northeastern regional manager.
