Clear Seas Research has published its 2018 Flooring Installation Products CLEAReport. The online survey, which polled subscribers of Floor Covering Installer, Floor Trends magazines, and members of Clear Seas’ myCLEARopinion panel, was conducted from April 20 to May 6. As part of the survey, 417 respondents shared the types of installation products they used last year, their main purchase channels for these products and their primary brands across the hardwood, vinyl/resilient/LVT and carpet installation segments.


Industry overview: Respondents reported that most of their flooring projects are based in the residential segment and are predominantly replacement/remodeling versus new construction. Flooring and installation material distributors are the most-used purchase channel (46%), followed by home improvement centers (29%).

The breakdown of flooring projects by material type are: carpet (23%), hardwood (19%), vinyl/resilient/LVT (16%), laminate (9%) and all others (33%).


Hardwood: According to respondents, the top five criteria in selecting a hardwood flooring installation product are: product performance (92% listed as “important” or “very important”), past/personal experience (86%), product availability (85%), competitive price (74%) and warranty (74%).

Hardwood installation projects executed last year included the following products: moldings/transitions (83%), underlayment (83%), floor preparation products (81%), adhesives (79%), nailers/staplers (64%) and moisture meters (44%).

  • The leading primary brands for adhesives are: Bostik, MAPEI, Titebond/Franklin and Ardex/Henry. The types of adhesives used are: regular wood adhesives (36%), wood adhesives with moisture barrier (33%), other (1%) and none (30%).
  • The leading primary brands for moisture meters are: Wagner, General Tools, Tramex and Delmhorst.
  • The leading primary brands in underlayments are: VersaShield (now called Kovara), FloorMuffler and Traxx. The types of underlayment used are: vapor barrier (41%), thermal vapor barrier (21%), foam (17%), cork (7%), other (1%) and none (30%).
  • The leading primary brands for floor preparation products are: Ardex/Henry, Laticrete, MAPEI and Bostik.
  • The leading primary brands for nailers/staplers are: Bostitch, DeWalt, Powernail and Bosch.
  • The leading primary brands for moldings/transitions are: Artistic Finishes, Seneca Millwork and Versatrim.

Laminate: Laminate installation projects last year used the following products: sealants/caulk sealants (83%), underlayment (77%), floor preparation products (73%), laminate cutters (48%), laminate pressure tool/installation kits (46%) and moisture meters (28%).

Vinyl/resilient/LVT: According to respondents, the top five criteria in selecting a vinyl/resilient/LVT installation product are: product performance (92%), product availability (87%), past/personal experience (83%), competitive price (80%) and warranty (69%).

Vinyl/resilient/LVT installation projects last year used the following products: adhesives (86%), moldings/transitions (83%), underlayment (79%), vinyl cutters/shears (47%) and moisture meters (31%).

  • The leading primary brands for adhesives are: MAPEI, Ardex/Henry and Bostik.
  • The leading primary brands for moisture meters are: Wagner, Tramex and Protimeter.
  • The leading primary brands for underlayment are: VersaShield (now called Kovara), MP Global, FloorMuffler and Maxxon. The types of underlayment used are: vapor barrier (24%), foam (21%), thermal vapor barrier (16%), cork (5%), other (5%) and none (30%).
  • The leading primary brands for cutters/shears are: Crain Tools, Bullet Tools and Roberts/QEP.
  • The leading primary brands for moldings/transitions are: Artistic Finishes and MD-Pro.

Carpet: According to respondents, the top five criteria in selecting a carpet installation product are: product performance (87%), product availability (85%), past/personal experience (84%), competitive price (82%) and warranty (69%).

Carpet installation projects last year used the following products: carpet cushion (70%), carpet adhesive (70%), floor preparation products (63%), seam tape (58%) and carpet installation tools (51%).

  • The leading primary brands in adhesives are: MAPEI, Ardex/Henry and Bostik.
  • The leading primary brands in carpet cushions are: Leggett & Platt, Carpenter, Foam Products and Healthier Choice. The types of carpet cushion used are: carpet pad only (55%), carpet pad with moisture barrier (24%), carpet pad with soundproofing (10%), other (1%) and none (30%).
  • The leading primary brands in floor preparation products are: Ardex/Henry, MAPEI, Laticrete and Bostik.
  • The leading primary brands in installation tools are: Crain Tools, Gundlach, Roberts/QEP and Traxx/Koolglide.
  • The leading primary brands in seam tape are: Orcon, Traxx, Roberts/QEP and Capitol.
