Highlights from NWFA’s 2019 Convention
The National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) held its annual Expo last month in Fort Worth, Texas. Carrying the theme “Make Your Mark,” the event featured the latest hardwood flooring installation tools, adhesives, finishes and other products. Here were some of the highlights.
Artistic Finishes. Bill Treiber, technical sales and education manager for Artistic Finishes, spoke about his company’s new Engineered Stair Nose. “It fits 1/2-, 9/16-, 5/8- and 3/4-in. flooring, comes in 84-in. lengths and features a contemporary bullnose profile and 4mm-thick sawn-face wear layer.”
He also made note of the company’s new builder program for stair treads, which will be available in unfinished, prefinished and “special finished” (a scraped, brushed, oil finish) in white oak, red oak, maple and pecan.
Basic Coatings. Among Basic Coatings’ latest is the new family of HyperTone Stains, a penetrating water/oil hybrid stain that is low in odor, easy to apply and fast-drying, according to the company. Robert McNamara, director of sales, noted, “Everyone in the industry is going toward lower VOCs and noncombustible formulations. HyperTone Stains offer a good advantage for residential, commercial, industrial and sports floors.”
Bona. Dave Darche, Bona’s national market manager for adhesives/A&D, discussed his company’s R540 moisture barrier and primer, and R880 rapid-setting adhesive designed specifically for vertical applications. He stated, “Bona R540 allows you to install the floor even if there’s been a spike in moisture. Bona R880 is an extremely high-tech product for vertical wall applications.”
Bostik. Eric Kurtz, senior market manager for hardwood, resilient and surface preparation systems at Bostik, displayed three new products. He said, “Wood-Tack is a water-based adhesive for engineered wood flooring. It has immediate grab, low VOCs and is exceptionally easy to trowel. SL-Rapid is our latest self-leveling underlayment, designed to install flooring in one to four hours. PWC is a general purpose siliconized acrylic caulk, which can be painted with latex and oil-based paints.”
Loba-Wakol. Dave Davenport, a technical representative with Loba-Wakol, explained the benefits of the Wakol MS 330 Moisture Barrier and Lobadur Viva finish. “Wakol MS 330 is the first silane-based moisture mitigation system on the market. It’s one-component, with no mixing and no waste. Lobadur Viva is a single-component, water-based finish with easy application and high resistance to chemicals and abrasion.”
MAPEI. MAPEI’S Jeff Johnson, business manager for floor covering installation systems and surface preparation products, showcased the new Mapecontact MRT and SRT moisture-resistant, double-sided tapes designed for installing LVT, LVP, vinyl sheet and prefinished wood flooring.
MP Global. Jack Boesch, MP Global Products’ director of marketing, showed his company’s range of QuietWalk underlayments as well as the OnGuard line of surface protection. The range includes OnGuard PE to prevent scratching and denting of newly installed floors; FlexGuard to protect flooring and other jobsite surfaces; VariGuard for most flooring types in a breathable roll that protects the surface while allowing curing to continue; and DutyGuard, a heavy-duty and durable paper board that protects against spills yet is breathable.
Proflex. Tim Abbott, CEO of Proflex, rolled out the UCM membrane, an uncoupling membrane that also offers waterproofing and sound reduction capabilities. He stated, “The cavities are filled with quartz sand, which gives the membrane the sound-deadening characteristics not normally found in uncoupling mats.”
He also displayed LV-100, a resilient flooring underlayment for glue-down and floating installations including luxury vinyl and rigid core products.
Seneca Millwork. Cindy Huff, marketing special projects coordinator for Seneca Millwork, displayed the SignatureFlex flexible moldings, which are available unfinished in a wood grain texture or a smooth finish; both options can be stained or painted.
Taylor Adhesives. Jerry Squier, regional sales manager for Taylor Adhesives, discussed his company’s new Aspen line. “It’s a modified urethane that’s isocyanate free. It has an early grab, fast cure and high-strength, waterproof bond. It’s also non-staining and easy to clean.”
