Water-Resistant Products in the Flooring Industry
Moisture-resistant products are crucial for protecting floors against damage and costly repairs. These products help save time on replacements or repairs that would be needed without water-proof protection. They also provide protection against safety hazards such as buckled or broken down floors.
Floor Covering Installer takes a look at some quality moisture-resistant products from companies in the flooring industry.
Flir Systems Moisture Meters
Flir Systems announced two moisture meters with Bluetooth wireless connectivity: the Flir MR59 ball probe moisture meter and the Flir MR55 pin moisture meter. These accurate, easy-to-use inspection tools offer industry professionals the ability to read moisture measurements from a mobile device. The MR59 is a pin-less moisture meter, unique for its ball probe sensor, which helps users cover larger areas in a shorter time. The ball probe makes it easy to measure in corners, over uneven surfaces and around baseboards without leaving marks. MR59 can help detect moisture below a surface when there is no visible presence, allowing professionals to determine the moisture migration path from the source. MR55 is a pin meter with a built-in library of 11 material groups: wood, drywall, concrete, brick, and other building materials. The user can tune the meter to the most appropriate test material to improve measurement accuracy. Both the MR59 and MR55 were designed for professionals to improve work efficiency, inspect any location with ease, and access the most accurate moisture readings possible.
TechMVC Moisture Control
When a concrete slab presents high moisture issues, the TechMVC moisture control and alkalinity barrier can help resolve the problem. This high-density epoxy made of 100 percent solids is specifically formulated to control concrete moisture-vapor emissions, and meets strict ASTM F3010 product standards. TechMVC can be used on concrete substrates measuring up to 100 percent relative humidity, 25 pounds MVT and a pH of 14. A single coat application brings floors into compliance with ASTM F710 requirements and creates a barrier to the migration of alkalinity from the slab to the flooring adhesive and floor coverings. Once cured, apply a CustomTech primer and self-leveling underlayment, which create a durable system that’s designed for use with all floor coverings.
Bostik Moisture-Control Adhesive
Bostik’s Ultra-Set SingleStep2 is a high-performance adhesive, moisture control and sound reduction membrane all in one. This adhesive contains 1 percent recycled rubber material, has zero VOCs and does not contain any water. Ultra-Set SingleStep2 comes with Bostik’s Blockade antimicrobial protection, which inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold or mildew on the surface of the cured membrane. Ultra-Set SingleStep2 provides a premium sound reduction barrier over the substrate that typically outperforms ¼-inch thick cork underlayment. This eliminates the costly labor and materials required to transport and install these secondary acoustical sheet membranes.
DriTac 2000 Vertical Polymer Adhesive
DriTac 2000 Vertical is a polymer-based adhesive designed for interior wall applications. This instant grab adhesive provides superior bond strength for the vertical installation of hardwood flooring, hardwood stair treads, caps and risers, large panels, wallboards, mirrors, chair rails, windowsills and more. DriTac 2000 adheres to a variety of vertical surfaces without slippage, eliminating the need for secondary support on the majority of applications. This full-bodied adhesive can be applied with DriTac’s new high-gear ratio cartridge adhesive manual dispensing gun. “The performance characteristics of this product are outstanding,” said David Clarkson, vice president of sales, Eastern U.S., adhesives. “The decorative vertical application segment of the market has grown exponentially in recent years, and this heavy-duty adhesive carries a tenacious bond strength that can handle the most demanding interior wall installations.”
Hydro Ban Waterproof Membrane
Hydro Ban is a thin, liquid-applied, waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane by Laticrete, designed to save construction professionals time and money on the jobsite. Thanks to its rapid drying formula, installations are completed quicker, which allow installers a faster time-to-tile. While other waterproofing membranes on the market can take up to a week to cure before allowing for flood tests, Hydro Ban can be tested in as little as two hours.
Ardex MRF Moisture-Resistant Finish
The Ardex MRF moisture-resistant finish is a rapid-drying, skimcoat patching underlayment that can be submerged in water for any amount of time. This makes it suitable for use under moisture control systems, moisture-resistant adhesives and flooring. It provides a smooth surface and is suitable for use over a variety of interior and exterior substrates. Ardex MRF has a rapid-drying formulation, allowing for the installation of most floor coverings in as little as 30 minutes.
Electrode E14m and EG Pins
Measuring moisture in hard materials can be a tough job, along with inserting pins into hard material without bending or breaking the pins. The Electrode E14m and EG pins are strong enough to withstand hard pounding with a hammer, or when measuring materials such as strand bamboo, MDF boards or hard hardwood. The mini-Ligno DX/C is set up for the floor installer and inspector with 42 wood group settings to measure domestic and tropical hardwoods as well as different subfloors, drywall and plaster.
