The last convention I attended was the FCICA convention, held in Nashville, Tennessee, last March. I remember the day I flew home from the convention because as I was getting off the plane, it was announced that Rudy Gobert and Donavan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz had contracted COVID-19. I also remember that when we landed, I got an email from FCICA alerting attendees that some of the staff from the convention we’d just left had also contracted COVID-19. My wife Suzy and I went home, packed the fifth wheel trailer and our side-by-side UTV, and headed for the desert for two weeks to quarantine ourselves from our family, friends and employees.
It’s been a tough year for the world, but I’m keeping a positive attitude that flooring conventions will be able to hold their events safely in the upcoming months. I, for one, am longing to see all of my industry friends and colleagues that I haven’t seen for more than a year.
Suzy and I have both been vaccinated, so we feel as confident as can be expected that we will be able to get through this. And yes, we’ll continue to be mindful about wearing our masks and using our hand sanitizers, as this seems to be the new normal for now. Are there still concerns? Sure there are, but life and work must go on. I’m going to be attending The International Surface Event [TISE] in Las Vegas June 16-18. I know that the folks at Informa and Mandalay Bay will be doing their best to protect all of the attendees, and though the education and show floor may be a bit different, I’m optimistic that it will still be a great show.
This year, the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) and Coverings have partnered, so you’ll be able to attend two shows in one location. The show will be held July 7-9 in Orlando, Florida, at the Orange County Convention Center. The NWFA Expo will be held in the South Hall, while Coverings will take place in the North Hall.
Several other industry associations are planning their events toward the fall of this year. Be sure to save the date for the following:
- The Certified Floor Covering Installers Association is planning its annual convention August 18-20, In Orlando, Florida, at the Rosen Shingle Creek.
- FCICA will host its convention September 14-16, in Austin, Texas, at the AT&T hotel and Conference Center.
I look forward to seeing those of you that are able to attend the events, and for those that can’t make it, know that you’ll be missed! Stay safe, stay healthy and may you be blessed with prosperity!
